 Cinema and Psychoanalysis. The Theory of the Dream

We had watched a a series of films related to the theory of dream from different film makers.

Jean Cocteau (Blood of a Poet)

We had discussed various forms of dreams and KEY words associated with the theory of dream.

i.e manifest - something appears the subject reveals itself.
latent- latent becomes a latent manifest

Post- War- Avant- Grade Moving Image (2): Psychedelia

Today was about the notion of Gesamtkunstwerk, the total work of Art.

We analysed an extract called the Total Work of Art, 2007 and watched a few clips and short videos to help us understand this text and what Gesamthunstwerk meant. this theory was mainly about art and film in the 60s.

these were the clips we had watched:

Triumph of the Wall (1935) 

Tristan UND ISOLDE Teatro Real: an 5 hour performance about an complicated relationship about a couple whom can't be together and commits suicide.
Das Triadische Ballet. the production design was by the Bauhaus an Arts school as mentioned in the extract The Total Work of Art.
Looked at Andy Warhol again his video on the Exploding plastic Inevitable

        Post War Avant Grade Moving Image : 1 Conceptualism         

During this lecture we had watched a few short films from the 90s and then analysed them.

these were the few films we had watched:

Dir : Spencer Tracy, Film:Adams Rib (1949) Genre: Romcom
My opinion - Illusion of reality: war post trauma, cinema is a way of escapism 60s start to get interesting.

Andy Warhol- Screen Test Film- Edie Sedgwick is the subject in the test.
Andy Warhol- State Building
Empire Film above is a 16mm film, a still positioned film, no edits, no cuts used.

Bruce Nauman- film called Walking in an Exggarated Manner, an 16mm film 1967-68
Naumans film is weird, different and dont understand it and slow.

Film- Hand Catching Lead by Richard Serra. 1971

Berlin Horse- Malcolm Le Grice1970. used chemicals dyd on the film activated by light.
this last video is my Marcel Broodthaers 1974, considered the father of conceptual art.

  • Sometimes buyer's would be portrayed in the paintings
  • Mainly involves people

This film is first to use and invent the use of depth.

Modernism - points out that paintings are literally paint on canvas, and are not a reproduction of live, separating it from photographs.
